President's Message - "Our Uncommon Cause"

CLE providers everywhere court us to attend their seminars.  It's common to find CLE's on every legal topic imaginable and meetings are held at locations throughout Illinois, on the web, and in places everywhere from Bar Harbor to Bermuda.

While February weather in Peoria can't compete with Bermuda, the PCBA's Saturday morning CLE programs in the winter months do stand toe-to-toe with any seminar you'll commonly find anywhere else.  The reasons for this are simple:  Local PCBA attorneys create their own CLE program picking topics relevant to our practices, and local attorneys prepare their own presentations.

Our winter Saturday morning series is being held this year at the Spalding Pastoral Center, just north of downtown Peoria on Northeast Madison Street.  Those who have attended a seminar there have commented most favorably about the new, up-to-date location.

So if you haven't registered for a PCBA CLE seminar yet, there's still time.  I hope to see you there.

Kevin Miller, PCBA President 2011-12

Lawyers Helping Service Members

Past PCBA President Mike Lied recently helped a service member on a domestic relations related matter.  An additional matter was brought to our attention by PCBA member Melinda Usalis, and was referred to a Galesburg attorney.  The Association received the following note of thanks:  "Thank you all for the swift reply.  I have forwarded Mr. Dan Alcorn's contact info to Mr. Smith.  Truly appreciate all the support and please do let me know if anyone has any questions.  Semper Fi."  Respectfully, Gunnery Sergeant Rhome Ray A. Gozun, United States Marine Corps, District Injured Support Coordinator, Wounded Warrier Regiment / Illinois

Peoria County Pro Bono Plan

By Sandra Crow, Peoria County Pro Bono Plan Coordinator scrow@pslegal.org

The following attorneys and their staff have recently closed pro bono cases:  Jack Boos, Michelle Eggert, Dean Essig, Jeremy Heiple (4 cases), Brad Keller, Brian Metcalf, Bob Muir (2 cases), Timothy Swain and Rich Williams.

Just released:
The recent release of the FREE Illinois Pro bono Mobile App has now made it easier for you to find ways to use your professional legal skills in service of others.  The app currently has over 115 pro bono opportunities to choose from around the state as well as legal resources and upcoming legal events, including MCLE trainings to support you in those opportunities.  So, please consider giving the gift of your time this new year.  The app is available on iTunes and the Android marketplace, or simply access www.IllinoisProBono.org from your Apple or Android mobile device to download the app.  Please give this a try and I welcome any feedback.

Pro Bono Opportunity:
We are looking for attorneys who would like to assist us with the new pro se divorce clinics held at the Peoria County Courthouse.  You will sit at a computer with the client and help assemble their pleadings through the Illinois Technology Center hot doc system and answer any questions the client may have.  We have a staff of paralegals available to help with filing the cases.  After the case is filed, the client must obtain service and can call me if they have questions.  The prove up of the cases will all be held on the same day with the same Judge, and we usually need at least two attorneys in the courtroom that day to help with any issues that come up.  We would like to have a panel of trained attorneys so we do not need to continually repeat training.  If you are interested, please contact me scrow@pslegal.org, Michelle Eggert Jack meggert@vltslaw.com or Michele Miller mmiller@peoriacounty.org for further information.

Prairie State Legal Services Fundraiser Banquet - Save the Date!

Hawley Country Club.  Further details will be provided in the March LegalEase.
