On Sunday, September 9, 2012, Joseph Z. Sudow passed away. Joseph was born on April 15, 1914, in Sioux City, Iowa, and was raised in Aberdeen, S.D. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1935 and earned his Juris Doctorate from Harvard Law School in 1938. He then practiced law in Chicago until 1943, at which time he moved to Peoria to become the District Rationing Attorney. He worked there to help provide government rations of gasoline and fuel oil during WWII. In 1945, he opened his own law practice and in 1950, served as supervisor of the U.S. Census for the 10th Congressional District in Illinois. Joe joined the law firm of Kavanagh, Scully, Sudow, White & Frederick as a partner in 1958. He continued to practice law until he retired as Of Counsel in 2011, after his 97th birthday, when he and his wife moved to Washington, D.C. Joe was President of the PCBA in 1966-67, and was recognized in 2005 as one of its “Pillars of the Bar” for his decades of leadership in the PCBA and the community. He was also a member of the ISBA, serving as a former chairman of the federal taxation section. In order to support the ongoing memorial to members of our Association, we ask that you send a check in the amount of $5.00 to the Peoria County Bar Foundation in memory of Joseph Z. Sudow, or donate online. The PCBA has contributed $100.00 to the Peoria County Bar Foundation in memory of Mr. Sudow.
