Annual Business Meeting and Installation of Officers

On Monday, July 8, 2013, the Peoria County Bar Association will hold its annul business meeting of the membership and the Nominating Committee will be making its recommendation to seat the incoming officers: James F. Kane; President, Craig S. Young, President-Elect; Timothy J. Howard, Second Vice President; and Hon. Jerelyn D. Maher-Schulz, Secretary-Treasurer. The luncheon will be held at Four Points by Sheraton from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. A reservation form is included with this issue or you may go to www.peoriabar.org/Shop/CLE to register online.
One of Judge Wilson’s initiatives during her term as President has been the formation of the Government and Public Interest Law Committee.  One of the committee’s goals has been to assist the CLE Committee by providing input on topics of interest in the government and public interest law arena.  To accomplish this, an online survey was created and the link was sent to the membership on May 15.  Many responses have been received to date, but the committee urges those who have not responded, go to https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/5CGHQVK and take the 3-minute survey.
The second goal of the committee is to recognize a PCBA member for his or her long time service in the public sector.  Please take a moment to nominate a member you know for this inaugural Public Service Award.  The recipient will be announced at the Annual Meeting on July 8.  The nomination form may be accessed at http://peoriabar.org/form/pcba-public-servant-award.  Deadline for nominations is June 15.

Peoria County Pro Bono Plan
By Sandra Crow, Pro Bono Coordinator, scrow@pslegal.org
The following attorneys and their staff have recently closed pro bono cases during the month: Andrew Bell (5 cases), Courtney Dean (Caterpillar), Michael Fricke, Sam Harrod, Robert Muir (2 cases) Tyler Pratt, John Pusey, Michael Sposato (Caterpillar) and Carl Wilbur (Caterpillar). Thank you for your generosity.

Pro Bono Plan Awards for 2013
R. Carl Wilbur, Jr. of the Legal Division of Caterpillar Inc. was honored as the 2013 Pro Bono Attorney of the Year. Carl has been involved with the Pro Bono Plan since 2007. He is dedicated and finds great enjoyment in working with his clients. Although he has a really busy career, he somehow finds time to help low income persons in our community. When he started out he really didn’t know how to do that, so he became involved in trainings and took it upon him to familiarize himself with family law. He now helps his colleagues who also want to participate. If he doesn’t have a case, he will call and ask for one-this is special. Congratulations Carl.

Angela M. Evans was honored as the 2013 Young Lawyer of the Year. She started her pro bono work in 2010. She has helped a disabled woman whose life estate in her mother’s home was threatened, and she weathered through two very difficult clients in a foreclosure case and a consumer case that took many hours. She followed through regardless of the difficulty of the matter facing her. Angela was also honored as the 2012 Illinois State Bar Association Young Lawyer of the Year. She is currently an attorney with the law firm of Quinn, Johnston, Henderson, Pretorius & Cerulo. Congratulations Angela.

Kavanagh, Scully, Sudow, White & Frederick was honored as the 2013 Law Firm of the Year. The firm has received this honor in 1988, 1995, 2001 and 2003. They have been consistent in their commitment to pro bono services since the inception of the Pro Bono Plan. They accept direct referrals from the Plan, and also accept referrals from the conflict panel. One of their attorneys spent over 100 hours on a conflict panel referral. They are always willing to accept any case that is brought to them. They are a cornerstone of the Pro Bono Plan as witnessed by the many times they have won this award. Congratulations and special thanks to Karen M. Stumpe, James W. Springer, Ann R. Pieper and Gary E. Schmidt.

Michael A. Fleming was honored as the very first recipient of the Equal Access to Justice Award. This year the Peoria County Pro Bono Plan has established this award to honor those attorneys who have consistently participated through the years either through case work, work on committees, or taking leadership on projects. There are attorneys who are very influential in the pro bono process, but don’t always have the numbers that would earn them an award. Mike has been visible and working hard for as long as I can remember. He has been part of the Peoria County Bar Association Pro Bono Committee for as long as I have been at Prairie State. He steps up for fundraising events to benefit Prairie State, if Pro Bono is involved, Mike is there. Congratulations Mike and well deserved.
Many thanks to all of you for your strong commitment and to everyone who gives their valuable time to pro bono.
