Lincoln Banquet & Gala The 106th Banquet & Gala was held on February 8, 2014, at the Par-A-Dice Hotel. At left is this year’s keynote speaker, attorney and author Guy C. Fraker, with committee chair Sonni Williams, President James Kane, President-Elect Craig Young and committee member Arthur Kingery. Mr. Fraker practices in Bloomington and is a leading authority on Abraham Lincoln’s career as a circuit-rider in the old Eighth Judicial Circuit. He is the author of Lincoln’s Ladder to the Presidency: The Eighth Judicial Circuit.  Special thanks go to PCBA member John Bathke, at right, who sang the national anthem, and the Color Guard of the 182nd Airlift Wing who presented colors.  Also at the banquet Jeffrey Krumpe, Miller, Hall & Triggs, was awarded the Distinguished Community Service Award for his long-time involvement with CASA.

Legal Assistance for Tornado Victims
Project coordinator, Michael Gifford (at left), has reported, "The PCBA’s Tornado Victim Outreach Committee’s legal clinic was held at Five Points in Washington, Saturday, January 18th. We enjoyed tremendous support from our volunteer attorneys and Five Points. The following deserve a large “Thanks!” for the services they provided: Sandra Crow, Prairie State Legal Services, participating attorneys were Jennifer Bonesteel, Mary Corrigan, Ken Davies, Spencer Daniels, Angela Evans, John Heil, Jr., Ambrose McCall, Cathy Molchin, Chis Nichols, Sonya Pasquini, Karen Stumpe, Jerry Tuffentsamer and Kevin Wolfe.  Attorneys from Caterpillar, Inc. were Valerie Demaret-Fleming, Darren Greca, Daniel Marcinak, Terrance (Terry) McWhorter, Ali Nellos and Gina Vollmer.  Paralegal Heather Feeney was the Caterpillar coordinator."

Illinois Joining Forces
Many local attorneys have been providing services to local military personnel and veterans through efforts largely coordinated by local attorney Michael Lied of Howard and Howard Attorneys PLLC.  The PCBA hopes that by joining IJF, it can institutionalize Mr. Lied’s efforts to find and match service members to an attorney who can assist them, while empowering a greater number of service members with legal access and knowledge.  This month we would like to recognize attorney Jennifer Bonesteel of McCall Law Office for assisting reviewing a veteran’s family law matter. Although she was unable to be of assistance, we appreciate the time spent.  Anyone interested in helping with this program, may contact Mike Lied at mlied@howardandhoward.com or you may contact the PCBA at pcba@mtco.com

Fitness, Health & Wellness Committee: Member Link to Wellness
By Ron Hanna, FHW Committee Chair
Work Life Balance in Law:  Lawyers have all consuming jobs -- assisting clients at the worst times in their lives, juggling multiple client matters, working to fix or prevent serious problems, managing staff, managing money and running businesses.  Many lawyers also have a deep commitment to public service and donate many hours to pro bono services, service on boards and volunteering in the community.  Is the ability to balance professional demands with health goals and family time a myth?

The FHW Committee wants you to take a moment and think about what is most important to you and what you should do with your valuable time.  Check out some thoughts and suggestions at:

http://home.innsofcourt.org/for-members/current-members/the-bencher/recent-bencher-articles/novemberdecember-2012/lessons-from-lawyers-achieving-work-life-balance.aspx http://lawyerist.com/lawyer-mindset-balance/

FHW Member Tip:  It's easy to fall into the trap of doing nothing but working, sleeping, and looking after the kids, but over the long haul you will find yourself on the road to burnout.  Make sure you carve out a few hours in the week for exercise and outside interests.  You and those around you will benefit if you avoid sacrificing your own needs.

Lawyer Referral Service (LRS)
Special thanks go to the following attorneys James LeFante, Ryan McCracken and Richard Steagall on a case they settled returning attorney referral fees to the PCBA in the amount of $7,800. Any PCBA member who has been licensed for more than one year and is interested in joining the LRS should contact the PCBA for registration information and further details.  At left are Ryan, Mary Corrigan (LRS Chair) and Jim.

Other News
2014 ISBA High School Mock Trial Invitational will be held on Saturday and Sunday, March 8th and 9th, 2014 at the University of Illinois College of Law in Champaign, Illinois. We welcome new volunteers and send a huge thank you to those who have donated their time in the past! The Mock Trial Invitational would not happen without volunteers like you, who have made this program a success for 30 years. This year’s Mock Trial problem is based on the 1938 radio broadcast of “War of the Worlds”, which caused fear and panic among some listeners who did not realize it was a fictional dramatization of a Martian invasion of Earth. You can review the complete problem, the Mock Trial Rules, and guidelines for volunteers on the website of the ISBA’s Law-Related Education for the Public Committee at: http:// www.isba.org/teachers/mocktrial. If you have any questions you may contact, Marley Nelson, Mock Trial Coordinator, 302 Buena Vista Dr., Apt. E, Champaign, IL 61820; phone: 630.649.9681 or by email: il.hs.mocktrial@gmail.com.

Peoria County Pro Bono Plan
By Sandra Crow, Pro Bono Coordinator, scrow@pslegal.org
would like to thank the following attorneys and their staff who have recently closed pro bono cases: Lou Benassi, Sumner Bourne, Stacy CrabtreeDavid Collins, Robert Muir (2 cases), Sam Harrod, Ambrose McCall, Michael Mersot, Kevin Schneider and Jason Story.
Closed Cases
If you have pro bono cases that are ready to be closed, I would ask you to do so as soon as possible. The awards are coming up, and I want to make sure that all your hours are considered. Only hours on closed cases are considered. Thank You!

Noteworthy Cases
There are two interesting cases closed this month:
Ambrose McCall, Hinshaw & Culbertson, represented a husband and wife who had entered into an extremely unfavorable Contract for Deed. Their payment included an amount for taxes and insurance. The clients applied for assistance in obtaining new windows for the home, and were denied because the taxes had not been paid on the home for 2 consecutive years; despite the fact the clients had made the payments. The client came to us for help. Attorney McCall filed suit and the Contract for Deed was cancelled and voided. The clients were able to relocate thanks to the help of Ambrose McCall.
Attorneys Kevin Schneider and Jason Story, Westervelt, Johnson, Nicoll & Keller, assisted a non-profit organization in amending the Articles of Incorporation and in changing their name. This was necessary to better describe their services and to have the ability to apply for much needed grants. This was a small organization, but they did a lot of good for other low income people in our community, but lacked resources to retain a private attorney to review their documents. The organization is now in a position to apply for grants and other resources.
