Clerk of the Appellate Court
Illinois Appellate Court, Third District

Essential Responsibilities:  The Clerk of the Appellate Court is an executive level position with a wide range of responsibilities for the management of the Third District Appellate Clerk's Office.    Functions include:  Monitoring and analyzing case flow management; Supervising office personnel; Researching and synopsizing motions; Entering standard orders for routine motions; Managing the maintenance and improvement of the court's facilities; Serving as a liaison between courts, the public and the press; Answering procedural questions for attorneys.
Educational and Experience Requirements:  This position requires an undergraduate degree or equivalent experience. A law degree is preferred. Candidates must possess strong written and oral communications skills, high level technology skills, and demonstrated management and administgrative skills. A strong working knowledge of the Illinois Judical Branch and functions of the Illinois Courts at all levels is preferred.
Compensation and Benefits:This is a highly responsible executive level position within the Judicial Branch. The minimum salary is $75,761 - salary commensurate with skills and experience. An attractive Judicial Branch benefits package is offered, including medical, dental, vision, pension plan, life insurance and deferred compensation. 
Location:  The position is located in Ottawa, IL.  The successful candidate must be willing to relocate to within 20 miles of the courthouse.
Physical requirements: Ability to sit for extended time periods. Occasional in-state travel.

Law Day
The Young Lawyers & Law Day Committee is pleased to announce Congresswoman Cheri Bustos will be the keynote speaker for the 2014 Law Day Luncheon.  Congresswoman Bustos is a member of the U.S. House of Representatives of Illinois, 17th District. Please mark your calendar for Tuesday, May 13, 2014, from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. at the Peoria Marriott Père Marquette.  Special thanks go to the Law Day Subcommittee which includes Sharbel Rantisi, YLC Chair, Ashley Miller, luncheon coordinator, Melissa Schoenbein, Essay Contest coordinator, and Monica Kim, School Speaking Engagements coordinator, for their role in this year’s Law Day Luncheon. Retirement Reception 
The west lobby of the Federal Courthouse was filled to near capacity  on February 28th with over 250 members of the legal community attending the retirement send-off of Magistrate Judge John Gorman and his Career Law Clerk Jeanne Ballor, pictured at left.  Judge Shadid presented Jeanne with a certificate and Judge Gorman gave glowing remarks for Jeanne’s many years of service.  Following Representative Dave Lietch’s presentation of a certificate to Judge Gorman, humorous remarks were given by Judges Mihm. McDade and Tim Penn.

Memorials
On Wednesday, February 19, 2014, Colette Bailey passed away. She was born on November 4, 1955, in Evanston, Illinois. She attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help High School in Glenview, Illinois, graduated from St. Mary’s University in Minnesota, and received her J.D. from DePaul University, College of Law in 1987. After graduation she moved to Peoria, Illinois where she was a sole practitioner and public defender. Colette served on numerous boards, including the YWCA, the Women’s Fund for the PACF, the Junior League and she volunteered for many other programs. She was named in the 40 Leaders Under 40 in 1995, was also named to the Peoria Chamber of Commerce 25 Women in Leadership in 2000 and she received the Louise Alloy Volunteer of the Year Award in 1998 from WTVP Channel 47. The PCBA has contributed $100 to the Foundation in memory of Colette Bailey.
     The annual Memorial Service is scheduled for Thursday, May 22, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. in the County Board Room, 4th Floor, Peoria County Courthouse. Family of the deceased will be attending. This is a heartwarming service where members can offer personal memories of fellow attorneys. Those being honored at this years’ service are: James M. Voelker, LeAnna Karnopp Grimsley, Hon. Robert E. Manning, Jr., Charles M. Rock, Dean B. Rhoads and Colette Bailey.

People’s Law School
The Public Relations Committee has announced its 2014 lineup for the People’s Law School. This joint effort with Illinois Central College will be held on Thursdays at the ICC North Campus, 5407 N. University St. Peoria, IL from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. All sessions are free, however pre-registration is required due to limited seating. The lineup is as follows:

Job Shadowing
Eighteen students from both area high schools (juniors and seniors), and the Bradley Pre-Law program enjoyed the day with their assigned attorney.  Special thanks also go to Judge Lisa Wilson and Judge Kevin Lyons for speaking with the students over lunch, and U.S. District Court Judge James Shadid, for opening his courtroom to the students to watch a trial with a pro se defendant. Thanks go to Joshua Herman, PR Chair, and John Heil, Vice Chair, as well as committee member Carol Perkins, for their work on this year’s installment of job shadowing.


Young Lawyers
Although the YLC is busy with Law Day activities, they took time on February 26 to enjoy a unique social time.  One YLC-er wrote:   “I just wanted to applaud Sharbel Rantisi and Dave Wiest (and, of course, Frazier) for orchestrating the enormously enjoyable first-annual Hibachi night. Much fun (perhaps tooooo much fun) was had by all. Nice work!”  If you are a young lawyer, please try to reserve time in your schedule to participate in YLC activities.  As we’ve often been told, the connections made at this point of your career could last a lifetime!

Pro Bono Enters the Technological Age
Prairie State Legal Services and the PCBA Pro Bono Plan are partnering with Illinois Legal Aid Online to bring you pro bono opportunities online. Prairie State will post case-specific opportunities, as well as clinics, trainings and CLE events online at illinoisprobono.org. The PCBA will be posting opportunities for the Expungement Project and the Conflict Panel. You can view these pro bono opportunities through the illinoisprobono.org website or have them delivered directly to you via email.
To receive notice when opportunities are posted online, you must register as a pro bono attorney on http://illinoisprobono.org/. After you register, we will have the ability to email the pro bono opportunities posted on the site directly to your inbox. In addition to a list of pro bono opportunities in your area, illinoisprobono.org has thousands of resources for pro bono attorneys, including a library of legal resources, sample forms, and free online CLEs. This new venture will only work if you take the time to sign up. So please do so as soon as possible. Campaign for Legal Services Kick-off Luncheon
