Along with Prairie State Legal Services and Illinois Coalition for Equal Justice, the Peoria County Circuit Court is proud to announce the formation of the Peoria Legal Self-Help Center. The purpose of the Center is to help people who are unrepresented by counsel, usually for financial reasons, and to allow them access to the Court system. Prairie State does not have enough attorneys and paralegals to assist all of the people who qualify for their services. Centers have been opened in other counties such as Kankakee, McLean and Winnebago with very positive feedback,

The Peoria Center will be located at the Peoria law library and law librarian Vicky Mundwiler, along with other trained individuals, will be there to assist the people and help them "navigate" the computer program that will be available to the patrons.

Topics such as guardianship of minors, foreclosure, orders of protection, expungement, divorce, bankruptcy and other frequent questions of legal concern will be available on the site. Satellite facilities will be available with trained assistants at all Peoria Public library sites. The target date for opening is May 1, 2008, and more information will be forthcoming.
