On May 16, 2009, a chilly (but thankfully dry) morning, the Strides for Justice second annual race went off without a hitch. Our overall winners were Bob Williams and Jona McDermaid. We had sixty-six registered to participate and fielded over fifty (it was chilly and windy!). Due to the amazing support of our sponsors Heyl, Royster, Voelker & Allen, P.C.; Howard & Howard Attorneys PLLC; Vonachen, Lawless, Trager & Slevin; the Illinois State Bar Association; Hanna & Hanna, P.C.; and Nicoara & Steagall, we were able to raise $2,600 for Prairie State Legal Services. Both the Illinois Valley Striders and Cub Foods made valuable contributions to the race, providing accurate timing services and refreshments for the participants, respectively. We could not have put on such a successful event without the tireless work of our volunteers: Rick Gentry (Race Director), Debbie Ryva, Mary Swartz, Rob Everett, Lisa Wilson, Maureen Williams, Aimee Peterson, Josh Peterson, Jami Hall, Mike Fleming, Randy Ray, Deb Cooley, Jeff Ryva, Calista Reed, John Redlingshafer, Karen Kendall, Kelly Kolton, Sandy Crow, and Phyllis Wallbaum. We extend special thanks to Jim Kelly, who hosted a wonderful after-party at Oliver's Bar & Grill in Peoria Heights! Last, but certainly not least, we appreciate the support of the race participants from our legal community. My personal thanks to each of you, athletes and non-athletes, who strolled, walked, or ran the 5k. We look forward to seeing you all again next May.
